Report Writer Series: Custom Reports - Blog - Kuntz Consulting

Kuntz Consulting continues their Report Writer Series with Custom Reports. I suspect that it's a really small subset of consultants that has created a Report Writer report completely from scratch, not modifying an existing report.

Weekly Dynamic: Extender and Report Writer

A client was recently using KB 935385 and KB 898983  to attached an Extender field to Report Writer. The KB’s are fine but the examples are unclear in a few places so I thought I would provide some screenshots for clarity.

In this case the user was  trying to add a short note field from the customer address to a SOP order. The key in this case was Customer Number and Address Code ID, so those items needed to be concatenated into a single key to link back to the Extender field.

The basic steps are:

  1. Create and test the Extender field.
  2. Create a calculated to combine the Extender key fields into a key.
  3. Create a second calculated field to pass the key and return the extender data.
  4. Add the second calculated field to the SOP order.

This is what steps 2 and 3 look like so you can see an example:

Calculated Field 1: Build the Key

Calculated Field 2: Use the Key to return data.

Keep in mind that if you put the calculated field in a hidden area of a SOP document, this field will be hidden too. So if you put this in the comments area but there aren’t any comments, this won’t show. If there is a comment, it will show.

“…you’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?”

Steve Chapman goes all Dirty Harry on Report Writer with “…you’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?”

It’s not that I don’t like Report Writer, I’m certified in it, I’ve written reports from scratch in it (not just modified existing reports) and modified more reports than I care to count. I just prefer newer options.

In high school I owned a ‘73 Mustang. The big one with a hood as long as your house. It was a lot like Report Writer. It ran fine and was very fast…in a straight line. Sure you could turn it if you like sliding but it wasn’t recommended. It also had this annoying habit of dripping ice cold AC condensation on the legs of the passenger when you turned corners. (Another reason not to turn.)

I figured if I ever wanted a second date I needed to upgrade my ride. Report Writer is a lot like that. It runs fine. It isn’t as nimble as newer options and it occasionally pours cold water on people. If all you know how to use is Report Writer, it’s time to upgrade your ride.

Dynamics GP Land: Reporting Puzzle (2 of 2)- Report Options and Report Groups

In reporting puzzle 2, Christina Phillips finds inconsistencies in Report Options and Report Groups.

This is  just obscure enough to make me sit up and take notice. We found some unrelated obscure things recently. Maybe it’s something in the air.

Accessing Internet Information from Report Writer - Developing for Dynamics GP

David Musgrave looks at Accessing Internet Information from Report Writer.
I’ve run into this before and it’s interesting because the Internet Information windows actually access Company level tables so it often requires a little extra work to get to them.

Working with Vertical Lines in Report Writer - Developing for Dynamics GP

David Musgrave is back with a nice look at Working with Vertical Lines in Report Writer . There is a lot of practical advice in this post on a topic which can be maddening so pay attention.
