We've moved

With the release of my newest book, Building Dashboards with Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 and Excel 2013 it felt like I needed more flexibility in the blog, so this blog has moved.

You can still find it at http://www.DynamicAccounting.net but it now has a new back end. The archives have moved as well but they will also stay here to support existing links. Please update any shortcuts or favorites to the new location.

All new material will go up at the new http://www.DynamicAccounting.net

2013 Top 100 Nominations - Please nominate!

The 2013 Top 100 Nominations for the most influential in Microsoft Dynamics is now open at DynamicsWorld.co.uk. I've already been nominated but part of the process is the number of nominations. If you get value out of the blog, the presentations or the books, please nominate me again along with anyone else you feel deserves recognition.

I spend a lot of time highlighting other people's hard work. A nomination for some of them would be fantastic.

Handling Penny Rounding in Dynamics GP

Sheldon adds his thoughts on Handling Penny Rounding in Dynamics GP for Canadian companies. Since really it's just the penny coin that is being phased out, electronic transactions can still have cents, I have my own recommendation. Collect all of those extra Canadian pennies and send them to me. I'm sure that I can find a use for them. I've got two kids headed for college and if you cover college costs, I can still do something creative with them like this:

The Support and Service blog explains how Phasing out the Penny in Canada probably won't affect Dynamics GP users much.

Presentation Stuff

I'm sitting at the Microsoft MVP Summit, one of the few conferences where I don't have to present. Sitting in the audience always triggers reminders for my presentations. I'm putting some thoughts here for me and maybe to help others.

  • Bottom Line Up Front. Don't save the big reveal for the end. Put it in early and then talk about it, justify, explain. If you build to a big reveal, it's got to be huge to overcome 55 minutes of boredom. By huge I mean, you better give me a car when you are done.
  • Tell a story, don't write a book. Like the first point, we want stories but stories don't have to start at the beginning. Start at an exciting point.
  • The description of the session cannot be specific and detailed enough. More info is always better. Type, level, experience, expertise, etc. Session description/delivery disconnect is a an absolute killer.
  • Giveaways build goodwill. Giveaways exclusive to your session build more goodwill. Good giveaways build even more goodwill.
  • Tactful honesty is the best approach to difficult subjects. Raw honesty is funnier but it can come back to bite you. Dishonesty will get you killed.
  • Stephen Rose has a heck of stage presence.
  • I love the idea of a track moderator who may or may not be a speaker. If a track is in the same spot all day the track moderator helps close out a session, open the next session and keep people on track, what's next, etc.
  • Depending on the forum, be willing to toss the presentation.
  • Be willing to tailor your presentation as much as you can. (See session description) If you walk into a room and find  a majority of attendees are really advanced or really new to whatever you are talking about, adjust.
These thoughts are in addition to all of the other rules. Practice, a lot. Know your material. Have a point and make it, your presentation is not your slides, etc.

Building Dashboards with Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 and Excel 2013

We're not quite ready for preorders yet but my next book is getting close. The book is tentatively titled Building Dashboards with Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 and Excel 2013. Essentially we start with GP and build a live, refreshable, Excel based dashboard from scratch so you can see how it's done and do the same thing in your company.

One of my presentations at Convergence this year will be similar and it's fun to talk to people after they see how easy this is to do on stage. I get comments like "I can't wait to go home and build dashboards." I think the book is going to be a great resource for both GP and Excel. Like my GP Cookbook, many of the items apply to GP 10, GP 2010 and Excel 2010 as well so it's useful now and when you move to GP 2013.

What I would like to do is to give you the opportunity express your interest in the book. If you think you might be interested in buying it when it comes out, please sign up with this form. This is not a preorder so there is no obligation. I'm only collecting this information so that I can notify you when the book is available.  If you don't want to miss it, please sign up now.

I'm working on some kind of gift for folks who sign up via this list and then buy the book. I don't know what that is yet but I'll try to pull together something that doesn't suck.

We missed an MVP!

Somehow I missed the fact that Matt Landis of GP partner Landis Computer was awarded a Microsoft MVP for Lync in January of 2012 and renewed in January of 2013. With Lync integration getting even tighter in GP its nice to have some community folks with both GP and Lync experience.

You can't be an MVP in more than one category so Matt can't be both a GP and a Lync MVP but MVP's are a pretty small group and those with any association with GP are an even smaller group. Sorry it took me so long to notice this but congratulations Matt!

Collections Management for Microsoft Dynamics® GP transitions back to the original Independent Software Vendor (ISV)

Microsoft has announced that Collections Management is transitioning back to Professional Advantage. This is similar to a previous announcement that Extender is transitioning back to eOne. Interestingly this was actually released and then retracted several months ago.

I don't know where MS is going with all of this. I'm not sure if it's cost control, simplification for ongoing support or what. We'll see if I can tease something out over the next month or so.
