The Next Dynamics GP Book…Maybe
Shane Hall of Reporting Central and I have this idea for the next Dynamics GP book. We think that there is room in the market for a book on true confessions of Dynamics GP consultants. We’re thinking of a collection of real world stories from road warriors, sales people, whatever. We’re looking for the stories that we all share around a hotel bar, late at night, at the end of a long conference. The idea is that we want funny and embarrassing stories. That story about missing the urinal and and flooding your pants right before a big sales presentation, we want that one. The story about the long walk of shame in your underwear from the Holiday Inn tower to the lobby in Fargo, we want that one. You know who you are. Send us the stories and we’ll figure out the rest.
Here is what we are thinking for a framework:
- We will collect, catalog and edit the stories.
- The best ones make it into the book.
- The stories will be published anonymously unless you specifically ask us to use your name. It should be more fun trying to figure who goes with what story.
- We know that many of these stories have been embellished over the years so we may technically publish this as fiction. That will also make some of the edits easier.
- No we are not sharing any royalties with you. Write you’re own $%^&*@ book!
Email your stories to mpolino@gmail.com and we’ll see if we can make the whole GP community laugh.
GPUG Day 3
After a very busy night, a lot of people were dragging for day 3 but there were plenty of folks in the 8am session. I spent some time helping users with Excel reports and Reminders in GP while they fought over who could steal the Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 Cookbook that I had to give away later. The would be thieves were thwarted when they gave up and bought their own copies online.
The roundtable lunch with Microsoft went really well as did the security session with Andy Snook of FastPath. I wrapped up the day with a great 50 Tips session full of hardcore folks hanging on to the last session.
Thanks to everyone who helped make the GPUG Summit a huge success.
GPUG Day 2
So I had this great GPUG day 2 post covering yesterday and it crashed when I tried to save it so let’s try again.
After a busy night the morning 50 Tips session started a little slow. I fixed that by handing out Diet Dew. The session ended right on time and we had a lot of fun. After that I popped into a session on new budget tool Dynamic Budgets. It looks like a great release, give Zubin a call to find out more.
At lunch I had a great Microsoft discussion around the new light user licenses. I don’t think either of us changed the other’s mind but we may have moved toward the middle. I also got a look at the Metaviewer paperless system for Dynamics GP. If you’re looking for a document management solution make sure that they are on the list.
After lunch I caught a session on the new Navigation and Drill Down builders and those are both pretty slick. Later I was really impressed by the Microsoft Conduit session on the cloud.
What’s a Conduit session? Think 8-10 people, a Microsoft facilitator and more softies lurking in the background. You all sit around and talk about a particular topic, how it relates to GP and where MS is going and thinking about going. It’s a fantastic feedback session.
I’ve really been impressed with the level of engagement of the MS folks this week. They are not just listening, they are asking good questions, challenging us and working to understand.
After one last expo we all hit up Fat Fish Blue for the Rock – n – Rave party. We think we managed to talk a customer into doing a Field Service presentation next year. If your firm has an expertise in an area of GP consider leading a GPUG session!
Everyone had a blast and I was thrilled that I didn’t have to lead an 8am session the next day.
Weekly Review: Dynamics GP, Terminal Services, Cut/Copy/Paste
It's actually been a longstanding issue with Dynamics GP that when using it via Terminal Services users sometimes lose their Copy/Paste functionality within TS. The typical advice has been to logout and log back into TS and Copy/Paste is typically restored. On the Dynamics GP Newsgroup, Alicia W. has come up with a better option. Kill the RDPCLIP process and restart it. This reliably fixes the Copy/Paste issue. To make things easier for her users, she put the process in a batch file that looks like this:
tskill rdpclip
start "" rdpclip
That's it. 2 lines in a batch file and problem solved. Thanks for digging that out Alicia and making it available to the rest of us!
This was supposed to be fixed with GP SP 3 but the problem still crops up occasionally in TS even when not using GP so this tip is still relevant. Every so often even this doesn’t work and you have you close and reconnect.

GPUG Summit 2010 Day 1
The first 50 Tips in 50 Minutes for Dynamics GP session was packed with people standing in the back and we had a great time. Everyone seemed to enjoy the new set of tips. I had some great conversations at lunch in the expo hall, spent some time with Mekorma and did an interview for Microsoft’s Community site..Mekorma has some nice updates coming for their MICR check printing product and the community team showed off some things I had missed in the new site like the ability to upload video.
After that Bob McAdam and I facilitated an Extender roundtable together that I think really helped people get the power of Extender. Some other I.B.I.S. found me and were really excited about the new online payment functionality available November 1 for Dynamics GP 2010.
At dinner I spent some time with the folks from Metafile who are seeing significant interest in their Metaviewer paperless solution for Dynamics GP. After dinner I spent time with clients and Reporting-Central. All I have to say is, don’t party with folks who build a product call The Closer.
That’s it for Day 1. There were lots of side conversations and great interaction with customers, ISV’s, Microsoft folks and even a few people cleaning up after us in the expo. Since I’m in my home town with lots of access to Diet Mountain Dew I think I’ll make it through the rest of the conference.

Working with Temporary Files in Dexterity
Apparently David Musgrave is working as a temporary employee these, well, he’s focused on temporary things at least. First it was temporary tables and now it’s Working with Temporary Files in Dexterity .
Why you should care about Microsoft Dexterity in Dynamics GP
In his new Dynamics Community column Mariano Gomez looks at Why you should care about Microsoft Dexterity . For the medium and long term time frame I completely disagree with Mariano. The future of Dynamics GP is .net for on premise and cloud deployment. From conversations this week at GP PartnerConnections and the GPUG Summit, that has been a consistent message from partners and customers. I was also very clear in private conversations that Microsoft agree. MS has some great stuff in the pipeline so buckle up, it’s going to be a fun ride.

Weekly Dynamic: PowerPivot and Multiple Cubes
Last week we looked at PowerPivot for analyzing Dynamics GP data. This week someone asked if you can connect to multiple cubes with PowerPivot. Yes you can. For testing I connected to the GP Financial Cube and Sales Cube and then was able to join them in PowerPivot. These cubes were both on the same server but given the way that PowerPivot connects that there is no reason that you couldn’t join cubes across servers assuming that the you have the right access.

A couple of people have actually asked about speaker prep so I thought that I would tackle a question I get. Yes, I listen to music to get pumped up to speak. It’s usually the same song over and over again but it’s rarely the same song from one venue to another. For Convergence it was Skillet’s Awake and Alive. For the GPUG Summit it’s looking like it’s going to be BarlowGirl’s Come Alive. Fortunately for all of the attendees I don’t sing.
Weekly Review: Another AP Balancing Technique
There are a number of techniques for balancing the AP sub ledger to the GL in Microsoft Dynamics GP. If you are using GP 10 you can start with the GL Balancing utility in GP. If you are already balanced you can use the balancing code on DynamicAccounting.net to help keep you in balance on a daily basis. But what if you don't fit into either of these categories?
Well, courtesy of fellow MVP Leslie Vail and her newsgroup post, I though that I would pass along her technique. The usefulness of this depends on how many AP transactions you have, how many vendors have open invoices and whether you are posting in detail.
- Create a GL based SmartList that includes only the Accounts Payable account(s) and excludes any source document that equals 'BF'. Be sure to include the discount account if you are keeping track of it in a separate GL account.
- Add the Originating Master ID to the SmartList. One thing you'll notice right away is that if there is no vendor ID, there's a possible trx that's trouble.
- Export the list to Excel. Subtotal the excel spreadsheet by Master ID.
- Add another column in Excel to net the Dr and Cr columns.
- Now, the balance by vendor ID should be equal to the Balance on your AP trial balance.
- Check each vendor and for the ones that don't match you'll need to take a look at the detail transactions and compare.

PowerPivot is designed to support end user/power user BI, including millions of records, from inside of Microsoft Excel. It works great with Dynamics GP tables, views or analysis cubes as a data source. Even better, it’s free.
PowerPivot required Microsoft Excel 2010 at a minimum and gains even more power with SQL Server 2008 R2 and Sharepoint PerformancePoint Services. If you need a compelling reason to start upgrading to Excel 2010, this is it.

If you try to print an invoice batch and nothing happens there's a pretty good chance that the invoice has been printed before. Especially if process monitor doesn't show anything running. Remember printing to the screen counts as printing.

Weekly Dynamic: Integration Manager and Excel
Often users save Excel files to CSV or Tab delimited files for use with Integration Manager. IM provides a way to skip the conversion and just import an Excel file. To make this work you simply need to define a range in the Excel file first. Then create a simple ODBC data source and pick the Excel driver. Select the Excel file and the range.
Now you can skip the middle man and integrate directly from Excel.

Weekly Review: Account Security
I got bit by an old bug recently. To be fair, it's not a bug, it really is a feature, but that didn't make the bite feel any better and "bit by a feature" is a confusing metaphor.
If you accidentally turn on "Account Security" in the Company->Company setup window all kinds of mayhem ensues.
See, account security is designed to work with the Organizational Structure feature to limit access to certain accounts. The idea behind this is that some organizations have a very complex account structure and it makes picking the right account easier if you limit a department to only be able to see their own accounts. But if you haven't setup Organizational Structures (a pretty common occurrence), turning on Account Security will wipe out everyone's ability to see and interact with the chart of accounts.
Oops. It sounds like a good thing to turn on. I had this happen at a client recently and was stumped as to what had changed. I remember this scenario but it had been a long time. The client is new to GP and so they are not sophisticated enough to have found and turned off security to the Chart tables in GP10. Heck, I'm not sure if I could find that without some digging in Version 10, I certainly couldn't stumble across that accidentally.
A quick trip to Partnersource reminded me of this issue and a checkbox later, we were good to go. We didn't have audit trails on yet so I'm not sure (nor do I really care) who turned it on but we'll be adding that to the audit trail list.

All of this without requiring BIDS or Visual Studio.

Autumn Theme This Week
Here in the southeastern U.S. we’re seeing the first cracks in the heat and humidity that signal the arrival of fall. That’s close enough for me to make this week’s theme a preview of autumn to come.

Microsoft at the Top
Mary Jo Foley has some interesting tidbits on realignment going on at MS. Kurt DelBene is taking over as the head of Microsoft Business Division for Steven Elop who left to run Nokia. Here is the twist, Kiril Tatarinov, the head of Microsoft Business Solutions, where all of the Dynamics products live, will continue to report directly to Balmer. I have no idea what it means. Let the conspiracy theories begin.
MVP Award Renewal
So today is the day that Microsoft is supposed to tell me if my MVP award has been renewed for another year. Unfortunately the email from MS was not what I had hoped for. I found out that my MVP lead is changing and Melissa Travers will no longer be supporting the Dynamics MVP’s. On the plus side, they did renew my MVP status for another year. ;)
I would do this with or without the MVP but award but I still look forward to that email each year and it is still a lot of fun.
