One of the Worst Mistakes you can make with Dynamics GP is not backing up. This piece from Simple-Talk on 7 Preventable Backup Errors is brilliant. Dynamics GP Land: Consultant Tools Series: Travel Power Outlets

This only tangentially related to GP but Steve Endow looks Travel Power Outlets as part of his Consultant Tools series.

I have my own favorite. It’s the old fashioned, 3 outlet, bright orange plastic adapter. No it doesn’t have fancy USB plugs, but short of pulling out a prong, it’s nearly indestructible. Plus, they are about $3 at any grocery store or hardware store in the U.S. so I don’t feel bad when I accidently leave one in a hotel or airport charging station.

The right angles make easy to plug in any kind of adapter, no matter how big. The design does hold things away from the wall which is only an issue when the plug is behind the bed. It’s also surprisingly compact in my bag.

Weekly Review: Windows Arrow Keys

I thought I would highlight an almost invisible feature of Dynamics GP today, the arrow keys. At the bottom of most windows there are two small arrows and two arrows with bars like this: |< < > >|. Usually these are followed by a description. So what are these things?

  • The regular arrows move to the next and previous records.
  • The arrows with the bars move to the first and last records.
So far so good. Most people get that far.
  • The Description controls how the arrow moves. This is really the key control.
So if the description is "by Customer ID" clicking next will bring up the next customer by ID. However, if the description is "by Customer Name" the order may be completely different.
I see a lot of user struggle with the next and previous arrows forgetting that they can control this behavior.

Social Media for Microsoft Dynamics Partners

Jon Rivers (@Jon_Rivers) and I presented a session at GP Partner Connections titled “Leveraging Your Online Presence to Turn Lost Opportunities into Wins – Social Media for Microsoft Dynamics Partners”

The presentation was well received with participants challenging us on their social wins and struggles. Even folks who didn’t completely agree came up to us later with nuggets from the sessions that they were going to apply.

One of the key pieces is the repurposing of information. Blog posts become ebooks that become webinars that are split into tweets and on and on.

We don’t want it to be said that we aren’t willing to eat our own dog food. Along those lines we’ve expanded the presentation into an ebook available in PDF and Amazon Kindle formats from the link http://msdynamicsgp.blogspot.com/p/best-practice-guides.html#socialmedia.

But there’s a catch. If you went to our GP Partner Connections presentation we gave you a code for a free copy. If you didn’t go to the session it will cost you $10. It’s more than worth the cost in my opinion so go check it out.

MSDynamicsWorld.com looks at U-LINC Flexible Workflows for Microsoft Dynamics GP and SharePoint from Integrity Data.

I had a chance to see the product at the GPUG Summit 2011 and it looks extremely slick. In essence you “add” any GP window to their product. This creates a wrapper on the window showing status similar to how GP  manages the built in workflows.

After that the tool allows a SharePoint foundation or MOSS workflow to be built around the window or process.

The product launched recently and they are working on workflow templates for common requests but it seems like you can create almost any workflow.

As part of their early adopter program the application is incredibly reasonably priced so if you need workflow go look at U-LINC from Integrity Data. You can check out the website video as a starting point.

Schedule of Year-End Closing Blog Posts for Dynamics GP - Dynamics GP Support and Services Blog

Microsoft is working on a series of Year-End Closing Blog Posts for Dynamics GP.

Reflections on the GPUG Summit 2011

This was a fun Summit. I met a ton of people and I reconnected with a bunch as well. I’ve decided to just catch up everything I missed today so buckle up.

Before that happens though I wanted to highlight a few things from the conference.

  • I’ve learned that it’s really hard for me to blog, tweet and update Facebook effectively when I’m doing a lot of speaking at a conference. Especially with a 3 hour time difference. I was hoping that some new folks would help pick up the slack. You’ll have to be the judge of whether or not that worked.
  • The second slide of EVERY one of my presentations pushes people to blog/tweet/facebook if they are having fun. Occasionally it works. I intend to flog that until it does.
  • It’s really hard to get the word out about new things like the 3+ year old Support Debugging Tool or the 18 month old Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 Cookbook or an ISV solution.
  • The Microsoft team deserves kudos for taking shots in the GPUG Summit and GPPC town halls.
  • Most folks did pretty well managing Vegas and still making sessions. I’m impressed.
  • It was fun having CRM, NAV and AX attendees in the area as well. They party well.
  • The 50 Tips sessions still deliver value and still get people excited. I guess I get to keep doing them.

a.     In the entry box type the URL for the ReQLogic location like http://reqlogic.server.int.
b.     Click Add then OK.
2)    Back on the Security tab click Custom Level… and scroll to bottom of the list to User Authentication.
3)    Select the checkbox Automatic logon with current username and password.
4)    Click OK and then OK to return to your browser page.

GPUG Summit Recap Part 1

This #GPSummit has been a lot of fun and a little surreal.

- Congrats to the GPUG all star winners. My personal opinion is that they should really call it the Bob McAdam award. He is a tireless GPUG champion. Just don't make it a memorial award. We want him around.
- To everyone who attended one of my sessions, bought a book or laughed at my lame jokes, thank you again for being a part of #GPSummit.
- I learned something in Vanessa's Field Service class. She truly is the queen of Field Service. I loved the quizzes too.
- It was a little surreal to have folks walk up with a copy of my book full of sticky notes and ask specific questions about certain tips.
- I truly felt like a rock star when Kelly Youells bought my book. For those of us in the trenches she is a true rock star at Microsoft.
- We had some audio problems with David Musgrave's Support Debugging Tool video so Mariano and I winged it. Apologies to everyone and thanks for your patience.
- The closing session was way too much fun. I will talk more about what was announced separately.

More later...

GPUG Academy Training

I wrapped up a 4 hour training session on GP Administration Made Easy yesterday for GPUG Academy. The class was a lot of fun and we had some great questions and comments.

I noticed that one class participant had to step out several time and I was concerned that they had a work issue and weren’t getting what they needed out of the class. I was also worried that they would crush me on the survey. What can I say, I’m vain, but you knew that.

At the end, this participant came up to get their CPE form signed. They commented that the class was great and they learned so much that they stepped out to call the office and have them implement some of the things they learned.

I was blown away. Folks were walking out of the class to get their colleagues to implement things they were learning.

If you haven’t looked at GPUG Academy training dig into it. There are some great sessions and they are more than worth the cost.

Weekly Dynamic: ReQLogic Mobile Opening Attachments

We’ve been doing a lot of work with ReQLogic lately and with a client wanting to get the most out of ReQLogic mobile.

The client wanted to be able to open and review attachments prior to approval without having to separately download the attachment and go find the attachment to open it. Specifically, they were looking at PDF, Excel and Word files.  After much trial and error we’ve got some suggestions.

One note, ALL mobile devices download the file in the background, the key here is that they would like the download and open step to be transparent.

  • iPhone – iPhone handles this without any adjustments.
  • iPad – The iPad handles this without adjustments and the ReQLogic regular site works fine as well.
  • Android – For some reason the default Android browser had problems with this scenario. Downloading Opera MOBILE (not mini) and accessing the ReQLogic mobile site solved the issue. Most Android devices seem to come with the QuickOffice viewer installed which allows viewing PDF and Office files.
  • Blackberry – Blackberry will download and open the files in two steps but we haven’t been able make this work in a single, easy step for users.
  • Windows Phone 7 – None of the users at this location have Windows Phone 7 devices so we couldn’t test this.
